<description>Yes, I actually heard it live. I thought it was very insightful and entertaining (as Nancy always is).

It just goes to show you how important it is not to assume, and that there will always be a need for lucidity and all-encompassing, err... I mean simplicity and being thorough when writing.

<description>This reminded me of when I was installing networks for small businesses many years ago.

We had just received the latest “new and improved” network software from Novel.

When we began reading the library of manuals that accompanied it, it became painfully clear that the writers had left out some very important details.

Let me illustrate with another example.

Imagine you’re overhauling an engine for the first time. You have all the proper tools and necessary parts. So you dive into the manual:

“How to Overhauling Your Engine, step by step instructions.”

“Before you can overhaul engine, you will need to first gain access to engine compartment. To do this, insert key into driver’s door lock. Open driver’s door. With right hand, reach into car and pull on hood release lever located under steering wheel, continue pulling lever until hood is released. Release lever. Gently close driver’s door.

Walk around to front of car. Using both hands, carefully raise hood to a 45° angle, secure hood with support rod. Remove hands from hood.

Overhaul engine.

Return support rod to normal position and carefully lower hood. Press hood down firmly to lock.

Congratulations! You have just completed overhauling your engine!”
